The Mandarin’s Cesarewitch Racecard at Newmarket & a Selection from Chepstow

Newmarket

Dubai Nursery Handicap 1.10
American Star
Oisin Murphy, Champion Jockey elect, won this race last year with Adrian Keatley’s Wobwobwob. He can score again here for Ed Walker with American Star, who found things a little bit too hot in the Gimcrack at York but returned to winning ways dropped back into a nursery race at Newbury last month. The Starspangledbanner colt is going the right way and looks a solid proposition for the opener

Godolphin Flying Start Zetland Stakes (Group 3) 1.45
Goldspur
Charlie Appleby’s Dubawi colt could not have been more impressive on debut at Sandown, zipping clear of the remainder of the field in the final furlong and may have even more under the bonnet at this trip and on better ground. Stablemate Hafit also looked a good recruit, and has course winning experience to his name, so a good duel between the two is in prospect

Emirates Autumn Stakes (Group 3) 2.20
Coroebus
This race is all about the form line as both the main players have (losing) form against Mark Johnston’s Royal Patronage last time out. Royal Patronage was given here for the Royal Lodge Stakes here two weeks ago, keeping Coroebus out of the winners’ enclosure by just a neck, but this time Charlie Appleby can collect now dropped in grade

Darley Dewhurst Stakes (Group 1) 2.55
Native Trail
Following in the familiar footsteps of Pinatubo, winning the National Stakes at The Curragh before pitching up in this Group 1, Native Trail looks the one to beat for this season’s best trainer. Fellow Newmarket based handler, Roger Varian heads the danger list with his smart Bayside Boy, while Ger Lyons brings over Irish raider, Straight Answer, who has an unblemished record and scored impressively in the Listed Blenheim Stakes last month

Together For Racing International Cesarewitch Handicap 3.35
M C Muldoon (nap)
Considering his recent record in this race, where he has sent out the last three winners, it is hard to ignore the merits of Willie Mullins’ and M C Muldoon, who looks sure to be the stable first string with Ryan Moore booked for the journey. Fresh from a spin over timber, in the Guinness Novice Hurdle at the Galway Festival, he was unlucky not to land his last last race on the flat when runner-up in the Ascot Stakes. It’s always a competitive affair at the back end of the season but Willie Mullins has his stable in fine order and could well make it four in a row

Dubai British EBF Boadicea Stakes (Listed Race) 4.10
Gale Force Maya
She’s pretty well known after twenty-eight career starts, but has been in better form than ever this term with a string of good runs, and arrives here on a hat-trick after scoring at Pontefract and here last month. It’s been a busy season but she might just have one more big run in her returned to Pattern company

Darley Stakes (Group 3) 4.45
Barney Roy
After an unsuccessful year at stud, Charlie Appleby’s stalwart returned to the track as good as ever last year, winning two valuable events at Meydan before a cracking third in the Group 1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot. This is his first run this year but he goes well fresh and is so lightly raced for a seven year old that there may well be more to come, and he’s respected back in a Group 3

Chepstow

Dunraven Windows Novices’ Chase (Listed) 3.00
Fidelio Vallis (nb)
With the National Hunt season getting under way at Chepstow on Friday and Saturday, we’ll get our winter racing off to a good start with Paul Nicholls’ Fidelio Vallis. This is the multiple winning trainer’s usual route into the season, and he holds the key to this Listed contest
