The Mandarin’s Goodwood Festival Racecard for Tuesday 26th July

Coral Chesterfield Cup Handicap 1.50
Bell Rock
We’ll go with Andrew Balding’s Bell Rock for the Goodwood Festival opener, with Harry Davies claiming a useful 5lb. He was third in this race last year, but doesn’t have to line up against Maydanny this time around. The trainer’s in top form, and drawn in stall 4 means he can get good track position into the final straight, so with the the apprentice’s claim, lots to like

Japan Racing Association Vintage Stakes (Group 2) 2.25
Mysterious Night
Charlie Appleby holds the key to the first of the Pattern races at Glorious Goodwood, and in Mysterious Night he has a top chances of earning some Black Type on day one. His Dark Angel colt should put on a good show in this on his way to feature in the Gimcrack next month at York. Respected from a top stable, and surely in the mix

World Pool Lennox Stakes (Group 2) 3.00
Ever Given
Course winner Ever Given could well have been overlooked in the ante-post markets for this Group 2, so time to take on the gamble at a giveaway price. Hugo Palmer’s colt ran a tough eight race season as a two year old, so lining up here for just his fifth start this term should still be on fresh legs. Battle hardened, and with the excellent Danny Tudhope up top, he’s super each way value

Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes (Group 1) 3.35
Stradivarius (nap)
Andrea Atzeni is back in the saddle in a race he took in 2017 & 2018, before being supplanted by Frankie Dettori, who went on to defend this title in 2019 and 2020. Both jockeys are two-a-piece in this race riding the selection, but Stradivarius himself is four from four, so has to be the one to beat in his attempt for the five-timer. Stradivarius is getting to the veteran stage these days, but can have one last day in the sun with Andrea Atzeni just the man to get him on song

Nicholson Gin Handicap 4.10
As good as ever this season, winning back to back races at Ascot and Newmarket. He’s won here before, so knows what it takes to get the job done on this very fast five furlong downhill dash. Jack Mitchell is up in the saddle which adds to the appeal – go close

British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes 4.45
Chartwell House
Two runs at Windsor, and signs that he’s getting it all together. Well bred and sure to have come on for those outings on good-to-firm ground, with similarly fast conditions expected on Goodwood’s speedy six furlong track. He’s out of stall 10, so lacks the advantage of a low draw in a big field here, but sure to be in the mix

Coral Beaten-By-A-Length Free Bet Fillies’ Handicap 5.20
Crystal Caprice (nb)
Bred in the purple, and as the Frankel fillies have consistently come to hand far more quickly than the colts, Crystal Caprice looks the one to follow. Stall 1 is a decent draw, and Ryan Moore is booked for the trip, so a big run on the cards now sent into handicaps

World Pool EBF Fillies’ Handicap 5.55
It could pay to side with William Haggas’s Kidwah for this fillies’ handicap to close the first day at Glorious Goodwood. She may have failed to see out the seven furlong trip at Newmarket last time out, but returned to a speedy six furlongs here could be just the ticket. Eased in grade, and sure to be suited to this quick trip, she heads the shortlist for the in-form Somerfield Lodge yard
