The Mandarin’s Goodwood Festival Racecard for Wednesday 27th July

Coral Beaten-By-A-Length Free Bet Handicap 1.50
Secret State
There’s no doubting the quality of Charlie Appleby’s Dubawi colt, so much so that after notching up the hat-trick in the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot, a step up into a Group race looked a certain step. However, he’s stayed in this grade for now, and could well have more mileage from this mark before making the inevitable move up. Respected, as a Group horse still in handicap company

Whispering Angel Oak Tree Stakes (Group 3) (Fillies & Mares) 2.25
Heredia (nap)
Richard Hannon has a smart one in his yard here, and the Dark Angel filly wasted no time in building up a formidable reputation, winning her first four starts. She seemed to find it hard to settle in the preliminaries at Sandown Park last time out, but still finished a 4 length third to a couple of useful types. She has every chance of getting back on the winning trail here on a quick course that should show her natural speed, and can turn the tables on Oscula who rates the main threat

Markel Molecomb Stakes (Group 3) 3.00
Walbank (nb)
There’s sure to be plenty of support for course and distance scorer Rocket Rodney, but he’s got to repeat the performance here from stall 8 in a deeper race. Walbank has the advantage of a better draw, and Rossa Ryan will be hoping to get his Kodiac colt out of the stall at a clip for this speedy contest over the bare minimum. Rocket Rodney looks potentially smart, but Walbank, who cost a pretty penny at the Breeze Up, can start to justify his fee with some Black Type here

Qatar Sussex Stakes (Group 1) 3.35
Baaeed
Simply the best miler in the world this term, a mantle he took up when taking the shine off Palace Pier in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot last October. If anything, he’s looked even stronger this season, and should have the measure of both Alcohol Free and Modern Games, his main dangers. A joy to watch with a motionless Jim Crowley aboard, and impossible to oppose

European Breeders Fund EBF Fillies’ Handicap 4.10
Natasha
A good duel in prospect between Sea Speedwell and the selection. Natasha had not been seen trackside for 10 months before looking in need of a run at Newmarket twelve days ago, so is expected to come on for that run. She’s good enough to have lined up in the Group 1 Marcel Boussac at ParisLongchamp last October, so makes plenty of appeal in this Fillies’ handicap. Sea Speedwell is well bred, and will go on to win races like these, but Frankel filly Natasha is the one to follow

British EBF Alice Keppel Fillies’ Conditions Stakes 4.45
Star Of Lady M
A tricky fillies race where a a case can be made for plenty, but Star Of Lady M seems to be a versatile youngster who can act on a variety of tracks. It’s notable that she’s run at a different venue on all of her six starts, which included four wins. Race hardened from what has been a busy juvenile season so far, and sure to be in the mix once more

World Pool Handicap 5.20
The Attorney
A pretty competitive closing race to end day two of Glorious Goodwood. It’s hard to pick anything that stands out, but Charlie Hills’ has as good a chance as any trainer with The Attorney. He’s got course experience here, and his close fifth in the red-hot Bunbury Cup at Newmarket gives him a solid form line coming into this. Wiliam Buick is booked for the trip, and The Attorney has solid each way claims at the least
