The Mandarin’s Saturday Selections from Newbury & Navan

BetVictor Carnarvon Stakes (Listed) 1.35
Tiber Flow
Untried as yet on turf, but sure to be well prepped by William Haggas for this Listed contest. Showing plenty of toe, he just failed to get up in a 3 Year Old All-Weather Championships Conditions Stakes at Newcastle last time out, and looks ready for a step up to this grade. Cadamosto, from Aidan O’Brien’s red hot stable looks the main threat, so the two of them can fight it out

Al Rayyan Stakes (Group 3) 2.10
Foxes Tales (nb)
He was good enough to give Mostahdaf something to think about when making his seasonal reappearance at Sandown Park last month, and should be one to keep on your side in this Group 3. This Zoffany colt can continue progress as a four year old, and has a big campaign ahead of him with the Coronation Cup and the Hardwicke Stakes both in the diary. More to come, and respected

BetVictor London Gold Cup Handicap 2.45
Surrey Mist
An ultra-competitive handicap, as it should be, and Surrey Mist fits the profile for this Class 2 event. George Baker’s grey has been pretty impressive on both starts this term, winning with plenty in hand at Lingfield and Kempton, so if converting that to the turf looks sure to be in the mix. John and Thady Gosden’s Israr looks a well bred colt, and is taken as the main danger, but Surrey Mist’s Kempton win has been well franked since, so he gets the nod

Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes (Group 1) 3.20
Baaeed (nap)
It’s very hard to oppose this unbeaten colt who can count the scalp of Palace Pier from last season. He may return even better this term, for the in-form Somerville Lodge stables of William Haggas. Hugely exciting, and the one to beat in a top class renewal

BetVictor Conditions Stakes 3.55
Andrew Balding’s grey was an impressive winner on debut under rules here last month, so is taken to continue progress for this Conditions Stakes. Richard Hannon looks to have a well backed youngster in Persian Force, but course form gets Holguin the selection

Haras de Bouquetot Fillies’ Trial Stakes (Listed) 4.30
It may pay to side with Hollie Doyle and Nashwa in the last of the Black type races on this top class Newbury card.
Hollie’s in scintillating form this season, and John and Thady Gosden’s Frankel filly looks to have plenty of potential after a cosy win at Haydock last month. Sure to be well backed, but this grade is well within her range, interesting

Irish Stallion Farms EBF Yeats Stakes (Listed) 4.25
Arbutus could be one for the tracker, judged on his win on debut here three weeks back, despite looking in need of some track experience. However, this Galileo colt should only come on for that run and with the stable in such good form, and trying to win this for the fourth season in a row, there’s plenty of boxes ticked
