The Mandarin’s Saturday Selections from The Curragh, York, Haydock, Goodwood & Auteuil

The Curragh

GAIN Marble Hill Stakes (Group 3) 2.10
He won the Listed First Flier Stakes here three weeks ago, just getting his head in front in that five furlong dash, so there’s every hope that this step up to six furlongs will suit. Ger Lyons’ Tough Talk looks a good opponent, having also won here over course and distance, but might need further being sired by Kingman, so the vote goes to Blackbeard for the first of the Pattern races

Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes (Group 2) 2.45
A Case Of You
Given in this column for his win in the Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan, Ado McGuinness’s Hot Streak colt has to be the one to keep on side for this Group 2 contest. Though he wouldn’t want too much more rain, where the advantage could be handed to English raider Brad The Brief, A Case Of You is a class act and has plenty of big days ahead. Overnight rain – stick with Brad The Brief, but if it stays dry A Case Of You is the one to follow

Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas (Group 1) 3.20
It’s hard to ignore the appeal of Native Trail for the feature, and although he gave up his unbeaten record in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, that was to his smart stablemate Coroebus, so this looks an easier assignment. However, Joseph O’Brien’s Buckaroo is a course and distance winner and can give him something to think about. Buckaroo to cause the upset

Hanlon Concrete Orby Stakes (Listed) 3.55
Jason The Militant
He will be wanting the rain, but there’s some in the picture, so Henry de Bromhead’s useful dual code performer should have more to give on the flat. The record’s not bad so far, two from two on the level, and there could well be untapped potential at this grade, interesting

William Hill Bronte Cup Fillies’ Stakes (Group 3) 3.30
Silence Please
She moved across to Andrew Balding from Jessica Harrington for this season, and showed enough on stable debut last month to get the nod for this. With a clearer passage should be right in the mix for this Group 3 affair, with the visor back on to aid concentration

Haydock Park

Cazoo Sandy Lane Stakes (Group 2) 3.10
Go Bears Go (nb)
Good enough to feature in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Del Mar, where the only horse to beat him was the electric Twilight Gleaming, David Loughnane’s charge showed he’s got a big campaign ahead of him when scoring in the Group 3 Commonwealth Trial Stakes at Ascot. Having taken the trial, he’ll be high on the shortlist for that Royal Ascot date, but can land this on his way there with conditions to suit

Cazoo Temple Stakes (Group 2) 3.45
Winter Power
Just about the fastest thing on four legs on her day, she landed the Nunthorpe at York in taking fashion last season. She seems to produce her best on the Knavesmire, but this track should suit and she runs well fresh. The one to follow if she turns up, and the sole Group 1 winner in the field, so every chance

William Hill Tapster Stakes (Listed) 3.25
Lone Eagle
One of the finds of last year, winning here before a neck runner-up to the very smart Hurricane Lane in the Irish Derby. Good enough to feature in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, and the class act of this field. Hard to oppose

Grand Course Haies d’Auteuil (Hurdle) (Grade 1) 4.00
Klassical Dream (nap)
He put his mid division finish in the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival well behind him when landing the same event at the Punchestown Festival last month, never in doubt. He takes on course specialist L’autonomie, who carries one of the highest ratings in training, but that supermare gets stretched by this trip. Klassical Dream to continue Willie Mullins’ excellent year
