The Mandarin’s Sunday Selections from Pontefract & Uttoxeter

Pontefract

tiesplanet.com – Ties For Every Occasion Handicap 3.30
Origintrail
Ben Haslam should have every chance of landing this ordinary handicap with Origintrail, who has been steadily climbing through the handicap ranks this term, including a brace of wins at Ripon and Chester. She seemed to be up to running in this grade when second of four at Newmarket last month, and has a big shout here

Sky Bet Go-Racing-In-Yorkshire Summer Festival Pomfret Stakes (Listed) 4.05
Modern News (nap)
He won the Spring Cup at Newbury in April, and has stayed at the top of his game in all three runs since, with a win and a runners-up spot at Windsor split by a 1 length third in a Group 3 at Epsom Downs. This looks a fairly straightforward task, though Modern News has to give a lump of weight away to Alfaila, who should give him the most to think about

Northern Commercials Iveco Daily Driveaway Range Maiden Stakes 4.40
Wilkins (nb)
He was just a touch outpaced on soft ground last time out at Windsor, after leading the field for most of the race, so this drop back in trip is a logical move. He does look a top of the ground horse, so this return to quicker ground should also aid the cause, and he’s the one to beat from William Haggas’s in form yard

Uttoxeter

Brilliant Hygiene Services Ken Boulton Memorial Handicap Chase 1.55
Gulliver Collonges
Dropped in Class to a Grade 5 back in May at Warwick, he proved his class and returned to the the winner’s enclosure, so there’s every chance of a repeat performance here, despite the 4lb rise. He’s unexposed over fences after just three starts, and has the plus of the excellent Jonjo O’Neill Junior along for the trip. Lots to like

Amber Windows Josh Roberts Handicap Hurdle 3.40
Wbee
The Yeats gelding has been on a superb run since April of last year, winning six out of his seven starts, and could well defy the attentions of the handicapper to make it seven from eight. He has to prove he can do it on this new track, but with a win at Cheltenham back in April in a Class 2 contest, there’s every chance this course will suit. The one to follow in current form

Helen Leech Birthday Surprise Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase 4.15
Hereditary Rule
This race can go to John McConnell’s Irish raider Hereditary Rule, who has a far superior rating to his three rivals here. Imperial Sachin’s looks the main danger now housed in Fergal O’Brien’s yard sine the switch from Gordon Elliott’s stable. He won over course and distance just eleven days ago, but Hereditary Rule should have too much class in an intriguing race
