The Mandarin’s Sunday Selections from Deauville & Goodwood

Deauville Racecourse @racecourses.net

Deauville

Barriere Prix de Meautry (Group 3) 2.50
Duhail (nb)
Andre Fabre brought his Lope De Vega gelding across the Channel to feature in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood, where he finished a fine fourth on unsuitably soft ground. He’s returned to a better surface here and dropped back to six furlongs, so has to be the one to follow in these calmer waters

Lucien Barriere Grand Prix de Deauville (group 2) 4.00
Glycon
Glycon should get plenty of support for this Group 2 after the the way he won here over course and distance three weeks ago. He showed plenty of toe in the final furlong and with similar conditions again looks hard to oppose in this smaller field

Goodwood

tote EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes 2.50
Firth Of Clyde
This Gleneagles colt has hit the bar the last twice, but might just benefit from the extra furlong here. The booking of William Buick is notable and the main threat is likely to come from Richard Hannon’s Shabbab, between the two of them

Weatherbys Hamilton Supreme Stakes (Group 3) 4.00
Rhoscolyn (nap)
The move from Charlie Hills yard to David O’Meara’s Willow Farm base has really brought Rhoscolyn along, with wins here, and at Epsom and Beverley in the book. He only found Goodwood specialist, Maydaynny, too good in the Golden Mile Handicap at the Festival, and deserves a crack at some black type. Sure to go close

Chichester City Handicap 4.35
Just Fine
Sir Michael Stoute’s Sea The Stars gelding left his early season form behind when landing the spoils at Sandown last month. He seemed full of running in that class 3 contest and can double up with the excellent Oisin Murphy along for the trip to make it a good day for The Queen

Cowslip Bank Fillies’ Handicap 5.10
Maytal
Running in the Juddmonte silks, Maytal is the one they all have to aim at here, and she can make up for her last run at Salisbury when collared close to the line after getting a touch lonely out in front. Ryan Moore takes up the reins and she’s the one to beat
