Approaching the Pond Fence at Sandown Park

The Mandarin’s Sunday Selections from Sandown Park & Navan

Sandown Park

Guildford Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase 1.00
Minella Trump
He’s been in the form of his life this year, winning his last five, four of those at Perth where he clearly likes the track, but there’s nothing like striking while the iron’s hot so Donald McCain Jnr and Brian Hughes can book another appearance in the winners’ enclosure. Gary Moore’s Fifty Ball rates the main danger, but this is his debut over fences, so Minella Trump gets the nod

John O’Leary Memorial Future Stars Intermediate Chase (Listed) 2.10
Chantry House
A shame that this race has been reduced to a match, with just the one rival, but Chantry House is one on the up and was sure to curry favour however big the field for this Listed contest. Giving 6lbs to The Big Breakaway looks manageable despite this three mile trip playing into The Big Breakaway’s favour

Kingston Handicap Hurdle 2.45
Hudson De Grugy (nap)
Gary Moore’s French import has an excellent record here, with two wins and a runners-up spot from his three visits. He has conditions to suit on the soft ground, and can continue the progress he showed last season

For Auction Novice Hurdle (Grade 3) 12.40
My Mate Mozzie
There was plenty to like about his debut run over timber at Punchestown last month, making all and leaving the field for dead when Sean Flanagan pressed the button into the final stages. Surely worth a try at this level and there could be more untapped potential on show, exciting prospect

Lismullen Hurdle (Grade 2) 1.10
Flooring Porter
One of the real finds of last season, putting in a great shift to land the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival back in March to bring up the hat-trick of wins over timber. Failed to fire next time out at the Punchestown Festival but made a few niggling mistakes along the way which possibly blew his chance, so given another shot here to prove he’s going the right way

Tote Fortria Chase (Grade 2) 2.55
Notebook
A fascinating contest between the two principals, Notebook and Samcro, both running in the Gigginstown House Stud silks. The preference is for Notebook, with last season’s top trainer and jockey combination, Henry de Bromhead and Rachael Blackmore, firing in the winners again. Samcro can be brilliant on his day, though prone to the odd error, but a great duel is in prospect between the pair

Irish Stallion Farms EBF Beginners Chase 3.25
Ballyadam (nb)
He was a classy enough hurdler, but chasing was always going to be his game, so it was slightly disappointing to see him crash out at the first on his debut over fences last month at Punchestown. However, he’s given the chance to redeem himself with a second bite at the cherry, and should continue his progress in this sphere
